NFL Draft

The NFL draft was held this past Thursday- Sunday. This draft holds the players that will run the league in 5-10 years or so. Every single pick matters to every single team, for all seven rounds.

The draft order is decided by the team’s record last year. The worst team goes first, and the best team goes last. Teams can trade their picks saying ¨second round pick,¨ because they aren’t certain exactly what pick they will get.

For example, the Jets traded Jamal Adams for a first round pick from the Seahawks. The Jets already had the second pick in the draft, but the trade turned out to be the 14th pick, where they selected Alija Vera- Tucker.

With the first pick in the draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Trevor Lawrence. This was no surprise to anyone. Trevor Lawrenece is said to be the best prospect in the past 20 years. In Jacksonville, he will be coached by former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer.

Without the draft, players would just be bidded on and most likely sign with the team that gives the most money. Teams are able to give rookie contracts that are cheap, and resign with them after a few years if they perform.

With the second pick in the NFL draft, the New York Jets selected Zach Wilson. This is also not a surprise to anyone. Zach was not in this position until his pro day. Pro day is a day held by the college they attended where they display their skills.

Zach went to Brigham Young University (BYU.) This school is a bit smaller and you wouldn’t expect a player from BYU to get selected second. The draft can take players from any college and it just shows that if you´re good enough, you’re going to be recognized.

With the third pick in the NFL draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Trey Lance. This pick was a toss up between Trey Lance, Justin Fields, and Mac Jones. Every fan watching was on the edge of their seat waiting to see who it was.

If the 49ers would’ve picked Justin Fields, multiple teams such as the Bears, Patriots, and Eagles would´ve had to rethink their picks. The Bears ended up trading up to get Justin Fields. They traded their 20th pick, fifth round pick, 2022 first round, and 2022 fourth round.
