Every year there are at least five top films of the year, whether it’s comedies, drama, romance, horror, action thriller, fantasy or any other genres. Throughout this year, the action film genre accounts for 43% of the box office.

According to Box Office Mojo, The top 5 2023 films are: Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3., and Oppenheimer.

The film Barbie was released on July 21, 2023. Barbie is an animated romantic comedy, It all starts off where Ken and Barbie are having the best time of their lives and then later they discover the life of living around humans. The tomato meter gives this film a 88% rating which is a higher rating than the audience, the audience gives this film a 83% rating.

“Overall I really like this movie, it was powerful and moving. The only part I didn’t like was when Ken had taken over Babrieland,” sophomore Addison Sanders said.

The Super Mario Bros. movie was released on April 5, 2023. The Super Mario Bros. film is an adventure, science fiction comedy. While fixing a water main underground, Mario and Luigi are transported through a mystical pipe to a supernatural new world. An epic adventure begins when the two brothers are separated. A 59% is the rating of this film according to the tomato meter, the audience gives this film a 95% rating.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was released on June 2, 2023. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Spider- Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, in the Multiverse he comes across a team of Spider – People. When the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles is pitted against the other Spiders. The tomato meter gave this film a 95% rating and the audience gave this film a 94%.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was released on May 5, 2023. Still reeling from the loss of Gamora, Peter Quill must get his team to defend the universe and protect one of their own. If their mission is unsuccessful, it could lead to the end of how the Guardians are known. According to the tomato meter, this movie gives a 82% rating and then by the audience they give a 94% rating.

Oppenheimer was released on July 21, 2022. During World War ll, Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves Jr. appoints physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer to work on the top – secret Manhattan Project. A team of scientists and Oppenheimer spend years designing and developing an atomic bomb. On July 16, 1945 they witnessed the first nuclear explosion. In this film, the tomato meter rates the film a 93%, and the audience gives this film a 91% rating.

Even though the films: Barbie, The Super Mario Bros., Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3., and the film Oppenheimer were the top 5 films of the year, there are plenty of other films that were just as good.

“None of the top five were my favorite, but my favorite movie this year is Missing (2023). The movie was very suspenseful and had me almost out of my seat. The ending was a whole plot twist but overall it was a good movie,” freshman Maylie Hopkins said.
