There are a total of eight winter sports at Findlay high school this year. These sports include basketball,
bowling, swimming & diving, wrestling, Esports, cheerleading, gymnastics, and hockey. Consider signing up before it’s too late.
The head varsity coach for the boys basketball team this year is Ryan Gross, this will be his first year with
Findlay City Schools. They will return to the NLL (Northern Lakes League) this year. In first place last year with a 21-3 record, they will try to defend their title as league champs. There were a total of 10 players on varsity last year, and they all worked incredibly hard. Returning for the varsity girls basketball Team will be Brian Rosendale. They will also be participating in the NLL again this year. There were a total of 9 girls on varsity last year, one of which was a sophomore, Ryan Boes. The skill the coaches help build makes players very excited to return.
“Building the skill and knowledge on the court, and bonding with the teammates,” senior Eneyece Kunkle stated.
The boys bowling team coach will be Nick Smith. They will be in the NLL again this year. There were a total of
12 boys on the team. While the girls had 7 total. The girls bowling team’s coach will also be Nick Smith and they will be competing along with the boys in the NLL. In 5th place with a 3-5 record last year, the girls will be aiming to improve their record this coming season. Returning players say that their experience last year was very exciting, even though it is an unpopular sport.
“Joining the bowling team was an incredibly fun and exciting experience. I discovered that bowling, like any sport, involves a lot of skill and strategy. What surprised me the most was how enjoyable bowling can be as a hobby. It taught me that even activities considered different can turn out to be a lot of fun,” junior Rayanna Cap stated.
The varsity coach this year for the boys wrestling team will be Ben Kirian. They will compete in the NLL once again, alongside the girls. There were a total of 45 boys and 17 girls on the wrestling team. The varsity girls coach will also be Ben Kirian. Together, the boys and the girls had a total of 141.5 points last season in 3rd place. The coach makes this sport very exciting for returning players and incoming freshmen.
“I am very excited to join the wrestling team this year cause I like the sport,” freshman Bentley Roelle said.
The varsity boys swimming & diving coach this year will be Jason Chomic. They will also be returning to the NLL this year and placed 3rd with 262 points last year. There were a total of 17 boys on the team last year. The varsity coach for the girls swimming & diving this year will also be Jason Chomic. Alongside the boys they will be competing in the NLL. 13 girls were on the swimming and diving team last year. The opportunities the team got last year has this year’s new incomers excited.
“I am extremely excited to be joining the FHS swim team, I can’t wait for all the opportunities, friendships and skills I’m going to collect from this season,” Freshman Ziva Barrientos stated.
Varsity and Jv cheerleading coach this year will be Ursula Jefferson. While the freshman coach will be Miranda Crossman. The varsity girls will cheer for the varsity boys basketball team, the Jv girls will cheer for the Jv boys basketball team, and the freshman girls will cheer for the freshman boys basketball team. Last year there were a total of eight girls on varsity. Their spirit is great and they are mesmerizing to watch!
“I love the spirit everyone has, and being able to stay inside so we stay warm. I also love how the crowd joins in and cheers with us,” junior Gabriella Flick said.
The varsity hockey coach will be Ben Patey this year. Their record last year was 20-8-4 along with many other tournaments against local school districts. The Jv coach is also Ben Patey, with a record of 4-0-1 last year. Both teams will be playing in the NLL again this year. There were a total of 33 boys last year on the varsity team, there were nine freshmen. Returning and incoming players are very excited to be playing hockey for FHS this year.
“Being able to find new friends while playing the sport I enjoy the most, and being able to slam people down on the ice is really exciting,” freshman Hayden Hatch stated.
The gymnastics coach this year will be Traci Dunn and Joe Dunn, they will compete in the NLL again this year and came in 4th place last year with 128.05 points. They also compete at the OHSAA (Ohio High School
Athletic Association). Last year there were a total of eight girls, five freshmen, one sophomore, one junior and one senior. The coaches and teammates last year made for a great experience and got people excited.
“My experience on the FHS gymnastics team was great! I became close friends with my teammates and we had so much fun supporting each other and being a team throughout the season,” sophomore Renee Metzger stated.
Tryouts for all of these sports will be coming up near the end of Oct. and the beginning of Nov.
