Every high schooler looks forward to two major events each year: homecoming and prom. But which one truly takes the cake? They both include buying dresses, getting ready, asking people to go with them, and many more. The question is, which one is better?
Homecoming typically spans a week, featuring spirit days, parade, and dance. It welcomes all grades and even alumni, making it a celebration for the entire school community. It’s usually held in September or October, doubling as a celebration of the return to school.
However, Prom, short for promenade, is a dance usually held towards the end of the school year. It consists of only upperclassmen and whoever the upperclassmen invite. Typically, Prom takes place on the weekend of Mother’s Day and is often considered an act of passage for teenagers.
While they both have their virtues, which one is preferred among highschool students?
“I like how Findlay revolves around homecoming. We have the parade, the football game, and the Homecoming Court. So it’s really fun during homecoming season.,” senior Sidney Myers explained. “Prom is more stressful because the dresses, just that itself, are way more expensive.”
Some students tend to prefer homecoming over prom because it feels more intimate among highschoolers. It gets the whole town excited with having spirit week and the football game beforehand. Homecoming also isn’t exclusionary, while Prom is. It is usually an overall fun time amidst the town of Findlay.
“We have spirit week, the football game, and then the dance itself. I feel like it was also better at the school. It felt like it had more school spirit,” senior Colin Smith said. “I feel like prom is kind of overhyped a little bit. It was fun but it wasn’t like ‘oh my gosh, I have to go’ like all those people were saying.”
He also explained that he had way more fun getting ready for Prom because he hadn’t gone before.
“Because of the hype, especially last year being my first time going, I had a lot more fun getting ready and going to dinner for Prom.”
Homecoming seems to be the most liked among high school students. Not only does it include the whole school and the whole town, but it is also perceived to be more spirited. Some students feel that Prom wasn’t all that everyone claimed it to be, and that it was just equally okay but even more expensive. Since they both have their qualities, which one do you think is better?
