New Year’s Eve Celebrations during COVID
With COVID-19 still in full effect, holidays and events had been held differently in the year of 2020. New Year’s Eve and the events that tag along with it, have also been changed because of the pandemic.
One of the most popular events during New Years Eve celebrations is watching the ball drop when midnight arrives on television. During the event, there would be an extremely large amount of people attending, and musical performances playing during the night.
With a global pandemic, the event was changed in a few ways. This is the first time since 1907 where there were nobody present and celebrating in Times Square for the ball drop. To make the event virtual, a free app was made that would broadcast celebrations in the night and the ball drop.
However, the ball drop did not skip on their performances this year. Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, the event had well-known artists performing like Miley Cyrus, Nelly, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, Maluma, Ella Mai and Lewis Capaldi. Headlining the event would be Jennifer Lopez, Billy Porter, Cyndi Lauper, and Jimmie Allen.
The hosts at the event were equipped with masks, and maintained social distance while the show aired. Performers wore no masks so they were able to perform at their best, while maintaining social distancing as well.
“I didn’t even stay up to watch the ball drop. It just didn’t feel like New Years Eve this year,” says healthcare worker Amanda Grindell.
Multiple states this year encourage its residents to remain at home with their families this New Years Eve. It is very common for people to host large parties and gatherings for the holiday, but with COVID-19 still in the picture, state governors encourage people to cancel those plans.
“For New Years Eve I spent it playing Catchphrase with my family. We play the game every New Year’s Eve,” says housekeeper Brandy Baier.
Whether it is zoom calls with friends and family, or attending events on an app simulating the real ball drop, or celebrating with the family at home, people are able to celebrate together.
