On January 7, 2025, an ongoing series of wildfires affected the Los Angeles metropolitan area and surrounding areas. The fires in Los Angeles County have burned over 40,000 acres, and have killed at least 24 people. The fires have damaged at least an estimate of 12,000 homes and other structures.
In July of 2024, StateFarm, one of the largest insurance companies in LA County, dropped more than 2,000 policies. A lot of these policies were in relation to fire damages, leaving homeowners lost on where to go. Many homeowners who were left affected by the fires, and desperately looking for help.
“It's pretty upsetting to me that so many people are being affected by these fires. Especially because so many people are being left stranded from insurance companies cancellations, and having nowhere to go,” Sophomore Yesenia Palacios said.
As a result of the cancellations, many homeowners have begun to shift to the “FAIR plan.” “The FAIR plan is available to California residents and businesses in urban and rural areas who cannot obtain insurance through a regular insurance company,” the California Department of Insurance said.
“The FAIR plan I would expect has helped a lot of California citizens during these wildfires, especially ones that have had nowhere to turn due to the insurances,” Sophomore Ayslin Daughenbaugh said.
As of today, at least 29 people have died in the fires, according to the Los Angeles County officials. At least 17 of the deaths were in the Eaton Fire and 12 in the Palisades Fire, according to the medical examiner office.
Today, the Los Angeles Wildfires have continued to spread across the Los Angeles metropolitan area, leaving many individuals and families without homes. Due to these circumstances many have been left with no insurance, wondering where they will go next.
