The Success of HAIM
Pop-rock girl group, HAIM, is in the midst of many successes this year including a North American tour and an esteemed feature film. The group has accumulated great popularity within the last ten years from performing in opening acts, festival lineups, and small-venue headliners.
HAIM consists of three sisters: Alana, Este, and Danielle Haim.
The baby of the family, Alana, had her acting debut in Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest coming-of-age movie, Licorice Pizza. The film takes place in the 70’s within San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, while it explores the relationship between 25-year-old Alana Kane and 15-year-old Gary Valentine. Alana’s performance has been receiving incredible reviews not only from critics, but her colleagues on set.
“I didn’t know she was going to be that good,” director Paul Thomas Anderson said. “I’ve worked with the same guys for like 20 years, and I just kept looking around at them for verification…And everybody collectively on set was seeing what I was seeing — her skill and the way you can photograph her.”
Alana is also staying busy with continuing her career as a musician alongside her two sisters. On December 6th, HAIM announced their long-awaited North American tour in the summer of 2022. It’s safe to say that purchasing tickets would not be a mistake, as they’ve headlined for 3 previous tours and opened for 11 other musicians, including Vampire Weekend, Rihanna, and Taylor Swift.
“HAIM’s energy on stage is infectious, their songs are unforgettable and their talent is enviable. On record HAIM are amazing but…live in London, they are fantastic,” British journalist Lucy Alexander said.
HAIM works constantly to write and release new hits for their growing fanbase. Their techniques are obviously working considering that they have released three critically-acclaimed albums. How have they been able to create such great music?
“As cheesy as it sounds…I can’t imagine existing without my siblings. We’re like the closest siblings that I feel like exist,” Alana said. “If I wasn’t doing this, I would still be at Este’s house. I see Este and Danielle every day. They’re my puzzle pieces. I was blessed with being born with my puzzle pieces.”
HAIM’s family dynamic is the root of their success. The sisters were raised in a close knit Jewish household and they often speak proudly about their religion, making them notable influences for their community.
“I didn’t realize there was a void in Jewish representation in mainstream music today until I saw them live for the first time at Lollapalooza 2013…I had never experienced this sort of representation in the music world as a Jewish woman…and it was exhilarating,” Jewish HAIM supporter Meredith Bilski said.
This past December, the sisters posted a lighthearted video on TikTok of them singing Adam Sandler’s famous “The Chanukah Song”. They included their own spin on the song, adding witty lyrics that relate to modern pop culture. The video quickly went viral and brought joy to many…Jewish and non-Jewish. The writer of the original song came across the video himself and had nothing but love for the Haim sisters.
“Love you ladies! You are three badass Jews!” Adam Sander said, in response to the video.
If you are looking for some good music to listen to, HAIM is the perfect band to hook onto before they blow up even more. Their electric energy on stage is unmatched and their unproblematic but distinct influence in the media is incredibly admirable.
