Last release: Mylo Xyloto
Why buy it: Coldplay continues to showcase their musical evolution with the new single Magic. While the song has a different sound resembling that of bands like The xx, the group still manages to put their spin on it, with a catchy chorus and an up-tempo ending. Lead singer Chris Martin’s vocals stand out against the simple background beat, going back to what Coldplay does best. The group still manages to keep their records relevant in the evolving music industry without changing their unique sound too much, and Magic definitely highlights that. This track will leave fans eagerly waiting for the band’s Ghost Stories to be released on May 19.
Title: Hannibal 2nd Season Premiere
Cast: Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal Lecter), Hugh Dancy (Will Graham), Caroline Dhavernas (Dr. Alana Bloom), Laurence Fishburne (Jack Crawford)
Why Watch It?: For those who never bothered to watch Hannibal’s first season: fear not, this review has been carefully designed without spoilers. For those who did: fear not, the second season is off to a fantastic start! As I watched the Friday night premiere I was reminded again exactly what this show brings to the table. Carefully prepared human body parts are certainly on the menu but Hannibal’s grotesquery is served with a side of art. David Fincher-esque lighting, an eerie minimalist soundtrack and some truly surreal imagery all lend themselves to one of the most carefully crafted and effective moods I’ve ever seen on network television. Combine that with some top-notch acting and you have a show that is subtle and visceral, beautiful and terrifying. Although the whole cast does an outstanding job, the real standouts are Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy who play off each other in a way that is compulsively watchable. People expecting a clone of Hopkin’s Lecter will find themselves sorely disappointed, but anyone approaching the show with an open mind should appreciate Mikkelsen’s performance for the brilliance that it is. He plays Hannibal with both composure and an undercurrent of the predatory. My only warning is for the faint at heart. It really is astounding that Hannibal is aired on the network as the portion sizes of gore and horror are both pretty large. Anyone still interested should check out season one first. The premiere was wonderfully intense but made for a confusing and unsatisfying point to newly invest in the story.
Title: Grey’s Anatomy Season 10 Midseason Premiere
Starring: Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh, Patrick Dempsey, Justin Chambers
Plot: After Jackson (Jesse Williams) dramatically interrupted April’s (Sarah Drew) wedding in the midseason finale, the show picks right back up where it left off with even more drama and conflict. Partnered with yet another one Dr. Shane’s (Gaius Charles) mistakes, members of the hospital are dealing with the consequences of their actions at the end of the last episode.
Why see it: Fans finally got what they have been waiting for with the Jackson and April storyline. Though many of the show’s couples are going through some tough times, it is nice to see a happy one finally. The episode does not come without its fair share of frustration, though. The interns really start to get on your nerves and make very rash decisions while under a lot of pressure that has consequences for the entire staff. The end does take an interesting spin, with the discussion of inappropriate relations in the workplace, but unfortunately, it leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth rather than support for the victims, or in this case, Jackson’s ex. While the show may still provide some interesting storylines like the strange cat man, it may be time to hang up the stethoscope while the show is still partially on top.
